Dishes with Funny Names
By MummyDearest
While I was out over the weekend to a local pub, I got to know many new friends and being from a different country with different culture, naturally we talked about our differences. And the topic on food is always something we can connect with. Then I was asked if I had ever tried Bubble and Squeak (English dish but asked by an Irishman :-))..I was trying to be polite but I could not contain my laughter and burst out laughing..Lucky the irish are a forgiving bunch and I apologized but I was thinking what is this dish..a bowl of soap water?
So this was how my new hub on dishes with funny names came about and hopefully those who reads this will not get caught out like I did.
Bubble and Squeak
This sounds like one clean dish to me..well, but it is really an old English dish made from left over vegetables mainly cabbage and potatoes. Traditionally, it is prepared on Mondays because of the left overs available from the Sunday Dinner Roast.
Recipe as follows:
4 Tbsp of Butter
1 Onion - Chopped
Left over Potatoes - Mash it up
Left over Vegetables - Chop it up
Salt and Pepper to Taste
Lardons or bacon pieces - Fried (optional)
Method:
Melt butter in a large frying pan for around 3mins or until soft.
Add potatoes and vegetables and keep frying and mashing it until you get a nice and crisp on the bottom
Season to Taste.
Often serve with Cold Meat, Leftover Sunday Roast, Eggs..whatever to your fancy!
Fitless Cock
This has nothing to do with the male anatomy, instead it is a traditional Scottish dish which contained no meat. It was just oat meal pudding shaped like a chicken.
How to make a Fitless Cock..
Mix oatmeal, shredded suet (hard fat surrounding kidneys) and chopped onion together with beaten egg, then form it to look like the shape of a chicken, wrap it with cloth and boil it for 2 hours.
Wet Nelly
It really is just bread pudding...haha..
Anyway, this dish originated from Northern England and takes less than 30mins to prepare and 45mins to cook.
You will need:
Set 1
Left over white bread - 6 slices
Melted Butter - 2 Tbsp
Mixed Dried Fruits - at least 1/2 cup ( this is optional and you can replace with any dried fruits of your choice)
Set 2
Eggs - 4 beaten
Milk - 2 cups
Sugar - 3/4 cup
Vanilla Essence and Ground Cinnamon - 1 tsp each
Method:
1) Preheat oven to 175 deg C/ 350 deg F
2) Break the bread into small pieces into an 8in baking pan.
3) Sprinkle and spread dried fruits (if using).
4) Drizzle melted butter evenly.
5) In a separate bowl, combine all ingredients in Set 2 and beat until mixture is well mixed.
6) Pour Mixture over the bread in the baking pan and gently push it down with a fork until the bread is soaking with the mixture.
7) Then bake for 45 mins in the preheated oven or until the top of the pudding springs back when tapped.
Knickerbocker Glory
It is just ice-cream sundae served in a tall glass.
Knickerbockers are a type of long pants that were traditionally worn by children, usually boys. But it was not documented how the ice cream sundae got the name Knickerbocker Glory.
Wow Wow Sauce
Wow..what a name...so to end this segment of my dishes with funny name..i choose to end it with a WOW with the wow wow sauce..
This sauce was created in the early 19th century and it contains port, wine vinegar, pickled cucumbers, pickled walnuts, english mustard, mushroom ketchup (that sounds weird to me too), beef stock, flour and butter.
Give it a try and give your dish the extra wow... the recipe is here.
I also found out that wow wow sauce goes very well with bubble and squeak..so that makes a wow wow bubble and squeak!
Comments
A rose by any other name would still smell just as sweet and a dish by any funny name would still taste just as great.
Hi FordeAhern, Thanks for your encouragement!
Hi rjsadowski, Indeed..a good dish will remain good even if the name may not do it justice. Thanks for your comments and for stopping by.
